Following last night’s post on the #cyberpunk joy of playing The Last Night sampler, how about a short assignment on getting to know the sound design process. The man to speak to is the creative sound designer and fan artist Laurent Lozano who has also composed the soundtrack to Rayman: Origins and Rayman: Legends. He’s a French man of simple words. And it makes things much easier for us.

G. How did you approach sketching the soundtrack in your head? Was it from samples in your archive or did you have to come up with fresh ideas?

LL. The approach was very (very) rushy. I didn’t even have the time to listen to the Blade Runner Soundtrack or some stuff like that. I’ve just launched Cubase, opened a template session I had for a personal project, and started to play while recording. The main idea was to bring something dark, with some modular synths to sustain the atmosphere. And so, I composed the tracks (main menu, game over, and credits) in a straight 6-hour night, without sleeping!

G. Did the game’s similarities to Blade Runner and Flashback were of any help?

LL. No, not really for Flashback! I was a kid when I played it, and I can’t really remember the music or even the sound…
